CHILDREN'S ADVOCACY FOR RIGHTS AND EMPOWERMENT (CARE)

The Children’s Advocacy for Rights and Empowerment (CARE) Project aims to strengthen the development and participation of children and youth with disabilities, aged 7 to 25, by mainstreaming programs on empowerment, inclusive education and child protection in schools and communities.

Objectives:

 

  • Facilitate the formation of Children’s Organization, composed of children and youth with and without disabilities.
  • Work towards developing the children’s self-esteem, leadership skills and social consciousness through self-enhancement and capacity-building activities.
  • Strengthen SIMON’s advocacy on children’s rights and inclusion through the Children’s Theater Arts Group
  • Develop and strengthen existing partnerships and referral systems among government and non-government organizations in promoting inclusive education and children's rights.

  • Non-disabled members of the Children’s Organization who act as disability advocates.

 

Activities:

 

  • Self-Enhancement and Leadership Trainings
  • Participation in Children’s Congress, seminars, workshops and educational trips
  • Community-based activities that include sports fests, socio-cultural events, family day, youth camp and art exhibits.
  • Formation of the Children’s Theatre Arts Group (CTAG)

 

  • Talent screenings
  • Talent workshops and regular practice
  • Development of rights-based performances
  • Presentations in schools, offices, churches and community assemblies
  • Advocacy and community awareness campaigns on children’s rights and disability issues
  • Provision of assistive devices
  • Annual medical checkup and medical assistance
  • Provision of educational assistance
  • Inclusion of children with disabilities in regular schools

How the Program is Being Implemented:

  • Formation of Children's Organizations

    • Children are nominated by their teachers.
    • Parents must give their consent and provide support to the children.
    • Members: 20 children with disabilities and 5 children without disabilities per area.
    • Children must be willing to participate in workshops and regular theatre practice.
  • Management of Children's Organizations

    • Five (5) core leaders will be selected per area.
    • The core leaders will be in charge of organizing and facilitating the activities in their respective organizations.
    • The Children’s Organization will be under the supervision of the parent support group.
    • Monthly members meetings will be conducted with the advisers.
