EYE AND EAR CARE PROGRAM

Simon's Eye and Ear Care Program aims to reduce the prevalence of blindness and deafness in the Bicol region through both prevention and curative intervention strategies. Screenings and education campaigns are conducted by Simon and district partners in schools, communities and at-home, alongside the provision of medicine, glasses and surgery when required.

OBJECTIVES:

  • To reduce the prevalence of blindness and create awareness through advocacy campaigns and education.
  • Generate public awareness on the importance of good hearing.
  • Decrease the prevalence of hearing impairment in Bicol Region by 50% by 2010

SERVICES:

  • Release of referrals to indigent client/family
  • Evaluation of client needs
  • Provision of medicine, eye glasses, surgery
  • Follow-up and home visits
  • Monitoring and evaluation 

ACTIVITIES:

  • Training of Barangay Health Workers/Community Rehabilitation Volunteers
  • Creation of Eye and Ear Care Committees
  • Conducting Eye and Ear Care Education
  • Conducting Eye and Ear Screening in schools, communities and through home visits

HOW THE PROGRAM IS BEING IMPLEMENTED:

Simon leads collaborative partnerships and regular trainings with key CBR stakeholders including:

  • Provincial Committee on Sight Preservation (PCSP)
  • Department of Health (DOH)
  • Local Government Units (LGUs)
  • Ophthalmologists, Optometrists and Ear Doctors
  • Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) and Volunteers
  • Client/patient/families

Other actions comprise:

  • Networking and coordination with the stakeholders above
  • Obtaining acceptance of and ongoing support for the Program
  • Acquiring allocation of LGU vehicles for patient evaluation
