EARLY INTERVENTION PROJECT (EIP)

Simon's EIP project identifies and works with children (0 to 6 y/o) with developmental delays. Children are provided with stimulation, cognitive and language training, gross and fine motor coordination, and social and self-help experiences, therefore avoiding many of the major complications that may arise later in life.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Children with disabilities and developmental delays, through early intervention, will show differential gains in the various aspects of development, namely: socialization, self-help, cognitive, motor, and language

  • Children identified will be sufficiently prepared to be integrated into the community day care, regular school program or to the Special Education Centre

WHO BENEFITS:

ACTIVITIES:

  • Assessment - Portage checklist
  • Home Training using portage system (Portage System is a system of addressing the needs of children w/ developmental delays, including those w/ learning and physical difficulties)
  • Provision of nutrition supplements
  • Medical evaluation & intervention
  • Inclusion in Day Care Centres
  • Group Play therapy
  • Day Care Integration - for socialization & feeding (done weekly & monthly)

HOW THE PROGRAM IS BEING IMPLEMENTED:

Area Selection

  • High prevalence of malnourished children
  • Presence of existing survey of cases of children below 6 years old with developmental delays and disabilities
  • Depressed Barangay

Community Entry

  • Orientating Barangay Council for project adoption
  • Lobbying for allocation of funds to support project services and the honorarium of facilitators

Identification Phase

Children identified through referral from the following:

  • CBRV/Ws, BHWs, DCWs, BNS, Brgy. Officials
  • CBR Coordinators
  • Parents and others within the community

Assessment Phase

  • Facilitators assess the child based on the Portage Checklist
  • Medical / Nutritional Evaluation (Physiatrist, Physician, Developmental Paediatrician, Nutritionist)
  • Facilitator recommends the acceptance of the child to the project  
  • Home visit, validation and final assessment by the Project Coordinator

Admission Phase

  • Develop EIP Rehab Plan with the assistance of Facilitators
  • Submission of additional requirements; Medical Certificate, Photo (whole body), Birth Certificate (photocopy)
  • Orientation on EIP goals, parent's/ home trainer's roles and responsibilities

Implementation/Intervention Phase Services

  • Home-based Portage Training
  • Health Care
  • Nutrition
  • Integration in Day Care Centres

Final Assessment; reassessment /evaluation of IRP (Portage, Medical, Nutritional)
